How old do you need to be to play netball? It is a Netball Victoria requirement to be 7 years of age to play netball. This means, as soon as a child has their 7th birthday, they are able to take the court. Children between 5-10 years of age may participate in the Net Set Go program, which is run at the Waverley Netball Centre on Tuesday and Friday evenings. Net Set Go is a modified netball program that teaches basic skills to prepare children to play netball, comparable to Auskick for AFL.
Highvale NC currently runs skills development sessions in the first half of the year aimed at any child turning 7 or older in that playing year who is new to netball with the prospect of playing in a team at Jells park in the Spring of that year. What are the competition age groups? Age groups are: 9 & Under, 11 & Under, 13 & Under, 15 & Under, 17 & Under, and Open.
How do you select teams? Teams are formed each season according to age, skill level, team balance, and where possible, player preference, using the team formation policy. At HNC, we do not hold trials or selections and believe that all players should be included fairly. New players to the club will initially be offered a position in a team where a vacancy exists in their age group. Special consideration can be requested for a player to play below their age group if it is appropriate.
When/where do you train? We train at WDNA Courts (Corner Cassinia Ave & Farmer St, Ashwood) on Wednesday evenings. U11s and U13s train at 5 pm; U15s and U17s train at 6 pm on the outdoor courts. Training is for 60 minutes. There is no training commitment for Open players.
Where do you play? Highvale NC plays in the Waverley Night Netball Association at the Waverley Netball Centre, Jells Park, Wheelers Hill on Saturdays. Games are played both indoors and outdoors and will be played at the same time each week for the season.
How do I register? Existing players can register via our Online Registration Form. We are usually only able to take new registrations at the beginning of each season and depending on club numbers. Do I need to purchase my own uniform? Yes, all teams wear either an A-line Highvale dress or a playing top and bottle green sports shorts. The dress can be purchased through our uniform officer via [email protected]. Sec
What should I expect on game day? All players should plan to arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled game time to allow for adequate warm-ups and team organisation. Each game runs for 45 minutes (4 ten-minute quarters with 2 x 1-minute quarter time breaks, and a 3-minute halftime break).
What do I need to bring to training and on competition day? Make sure you bring a bottle of water to all training and games. Players are also responsible for any personal medication such as asthma puffers. Please also ensure that the correct uniform is worn.
What should I do if I can’t come to training or a game? Notify your coach as soon as possible if you are unable to play or train to ensure a replacement can be found.
What is the club’s wet weather policy for training? Netball includes a winter season and players need to practise in all weather conditions. Unless the weather is particularly bad, training will still take place. If you are unsure, contact your coach or a committee member.
Please note, all players must be present at Saturday games to avoid forfeit fees, even in poor weather.
